PROCLAMATION
® Pets provide companionship to more than 71 million households in t
l§ the United States.
In the U.S. as a whole, there are an estimated 6-8 million homeless
animals entering animal shelters every year.
Q Humane societies and animal shelters have to euthanize dogs, cats,
p1 rabbits and other animals each year, due to a lack of critical
resources and public awareness.
• Spaying and neutering has been shown to dramatically reduce the
overpopulation of stray pets, and is a wise investment for pet
® owners. ti
• The overpopulation of stray pets costs taxpayers millions of dollars
annually through animal service programs aimed at coping with the
E abundance of stray pets.
® NOW THEREFORE, the City Council and Mayor, on behalf of the
citizens of Ashland, I do hereby proclaim September 7, 2011 as:
a
"Spay and Neuter Day"
in Ashland and encourage all citizens to have their own pets spayed or
neutered. `$
Dated this 6th day of September, 2011.
