This letter is about the ongoing Occupy Together rallies happening all over America. I hope the
police and others realize these actions are for all of us. 99% of the human lives all over the
planet are dependent upon restoring the balance in societies and creating more equitable
economies. 100%of all life on Earth is hanging in the balance. How unfair that most of the
wealth can be owned and control by less than 1% of the world, and how much more we will be
able to accomplish when, through peaceful means, the greedy and powerful will be forced to
reassess their actions and make way for the "Aquarian" beliefs of abundance, generosity and
sharing.
The best possible outcome for our Stop the Machine, Create a New World event in Ashland is
that it is peaceful and is tolerated and even embraced by all individuals and institutions. Allowing
the protest means there is Solidarity not only among the students, organizers and attendees, but
that a substantial like-mindedness of the middle class exists. The protesters are doing OUR work,
saying what needs to be said, demanding redress for a number of grievances, and asking for an
end to the edifices of war, fossil fuel, polluting practicings and oppression created by
disempowerment, unemployment, disenfranchisement of the majority of people in our country
and in the world. How can the 1%dare to continue in the blatant and flagrant abuse of the
people and the planet in the face of this show of solidarity? The lies, subterfuge, corruption and
packaging of toxic products, practices and financial instruments, bullying legislation, unjustiee
imprisoment, different rules for the rich and poor, and outright theft of citizens' money must
stop.
We must support, champion and emulate the courage of those who speak to Washington, DC
and Wall Street today and over the next many months. Merchants, business owners, farmers,
teachers, parents, children, seniors, and all of us can applaud this necessary peaceful RESET
which puts the "powers that be" on notice. The people cannot and will not accept any futher
abuse and by these actions we set in motion a whole new world and create better ways of living
in concert with Mother Nature and all sentient beings. I hope everyone, including the police and
those who direct them, will recognize the gift and sacrifice of the protesters that we are
witnessing. Let this peaceful message go out to the 1% - it is time for you to relinquish your iron
grasp on the global economy, end wars, poverty, hunger, and suffering whereever possible by
seeing and creating the highest good for the most people. Instead of fame for how much
decadent consumerism, power and control you have, reinvent yourselves and make your
recognition be about helping others. This life is not forever, and leaving it with the blood of
innocents on your hands is not a good way to go. All should be at peace and bow in gratitude
and soul-saving humility to these moments, when we still have a chance to make the world a
place we are proud to leave to our children and grandchildren.
If you are heading an agency, please forward this to your associates. If you have influence with
the Chamber of Commerce, City Hall and the Police Department, please ask them to stand down
and let our protesters bring the message with one voice -the voice of our region, certainly one of
the hardest hit by illegal and immoral actions of government and finance in the Country.
If you own a business, remember you are beholden to those who can patronize your shop, or
afford your services and products. We need a major overhaul of thinking and practices. This
"going on notice" about the unfairness is the first step to rectifying the problems. We will all be
required to sacrifice and see the world through a new lens where waste, corruption, laziness and
apathy are out of fashion and where "waiting for someone else to do something about it" is old
school, as is assuming power over others. Now all must be allowed to become productive
stakeholders, all with opportunites for jobs, education, and a degree of safety from want. This
can only come about when 100% of the wealth is circulating and we use what is already dug out
of the Earth instead of further "fc44ling our nest' or exploiting this and other worlds. We can not
continue on the trajectory of exploiting resources for frivolous uses or ego-based desires. It is
time to give back to the Planet and "live simply so others may simply live".
To learn more answers for a new day, please visit the group artshow and display I'm organizing
at 320 E. Main titled 'The Whole World is Watching" opening October 6th and 7th from 5 to
8.pm. On October 7th, 7 pm at 320 E. Main I will share my vision for solutions and the 50 year
plan to "pass through the eye of the needle" in order to stitch up the crimes committed against
the 99% - a "how to" about building a new economy from the crumbling of the old order. I will
read my revealing poems"What's the Use" and "Solidarity Lullaby" at the close of Plaza
ceremonies at 8 pm on First Friday, October 7th.
In gratitude for the peaceful demeanor and introspection of us all,
Catie

To: Ashland City Council October 4, 2011
• From: Sandra Coyner
cc: Steering Committee on Homelessness
I have sat as a citizen observer at almost all meetings of the ad hoc Steering Committee
on Homelessness since it was created last spring. My aim is to facilitate good
communications from Steering Committee to the Citizens Coalition on Homelessness, so
both groups can be effective as we respond to the challenges of homelessness in
Ashland.
Overwhelmingly I commend the Steering Committee for its work and the Council for
having created this committee. Its members bring a wealth of experience, knowledge,
and dedication and demonstrate that our early hopes for their work were not in vain. I
frankly have experienced some frissons of thrill as I watched this committee move from
receiving and commenting on proposals to some much more challenging and rewarding
work.
Precisely because of what I have seen, I urge the Council to support the ongoing work of
this Committee—including accepting the request to have its charge extended for another
year. Today's report sheds much light on why we still need this group.
I'd like to call your attention to the charge you gave the Committee, as listed on the first
page of the Committee's report in the form of five bullet points.
. Solicit (first bullet) The Committee received 33 submissions, some of which contained
more than one idea, so by my count the Committee actually received 73 ideas since last
June. They discussed them all. The submissions reflect huge citizen interest and volunteer
energy in Ashland. Yet this one call has not exhausted the supply of ideas, and the
Committee has planned to call for more, perhaps with a focus on the crucial concern of
jobs. They should have another year.
Deliver (second bullet) The Committee is to submit to the Council--to you—proposals that
are ready for Council action. If you would read the 33 proposals (73 ideas) received, you
would see that they all needed work to be ready for Council. Many merit the attention.
Early on, however, the Committee decided to triage, choosing some of the more Council-
ready proposals to nudge into shape. So today you have five ready for action expressing
Council support.
But these five ideas do not begin to exhaust the potential. The other three bullets in your
charge express with clarity what you want the committee to do, basically to encourage,
to connect, and to suggest alternatives (bullets 3-5). Let me use the proposals submitted
today to illustrate the importance of the last three points in your charge.
Proposal 1 : Public Toilets
This proposal is ready for Council action because of collaboration between the proposer,
Steve Auerbach (also in the Citizens Coalition), and the Steering Committee, primarily via
Heidi Parker. They connected with other stake-holders and resources, weighed
alternatives, and developed details of cost and location.

Proposal 2: Day Center
The proposal to provide rent-free space for the Salvation Army in Ashland needs more •
work in my opinion, but is ready for your statement of support. The Committee followed
up with the proposer and has begun trying to find a possible location. At this point, the
Steering Committee is asking the City of Ashland for $24,000, and I hope our City will
allocate this truly small amount, to help people who are unable to benefit from some
other services the City provides. However, I would also like to see the Steering Committee
reach out to connect and encourage the several other proposers who asked for a day
center, and at least contact local agencies who might collaborate, as it did while
developing the proposal for toilets. We should seek the optimal way to bring needed
services Jo Ashland at lowest cost. Perhaps the Salvation Army is the only organization
willing and able to help. But the rental cost for a thrift store is higher than the rental for a
day use center without a thrift store, and would join our existing resale economy. Give the
Steering Committee the possibility of money, and ask it to continue with encourage,
connect, and suggest.
Proposal 3: Donation Boxes
The proposal for donation boxes could get tricky, so I don't think the Steering Committee
should let it go just yet. Probably everybody in Ashland wants to enable everybody who
wants to help our homeless to contribute in a comfortable way. If boxes work, yay. But
this proposal also includes some plans to "educate" people and suggests a motive to
direct funds only to those who "truly want to get out of homelessness." We have to be
careful. I don't think our community wants to exclude some people from our
compassionate help, especially when those targeted are the most likely to suffer from
disability, mental illness, and extreme poverty. •
Proposal 4: Extend for a year. You know what I think of this one.
Proposal 5: Listening Post
The listening post is truly ready for Council action because it asks nothing of Council. It
gives you information—about a program developed by a group in Trinity Episcopal
Church. I don't know if this project would have taken off all on its own, but I like to think of
it as one of several sparked by the existence of the Steering Committee. Our newspapers
have reported on the Ashland Community Garden Share Project and the Plaza Watch
project. Behind the scenes, people continue to work on a mentoring project, on Ashland
reads, on housing-for-service, on jobs, and on Court watch. These are merely the ones I
know about because they are tied to the Citizens Coalition. They may or may not ever
come to you requesting Council action. But they will make our community a better place.
I am hugely heartened by the work and the report coming to you today from the Steering
Committee. I hope you will all join me in giving enthusiastic support and encouragement
for them to continue.
