HomeMy WebLinkAbout1996-04 Support Financial AidRESOLUTION NO. 96- t9 ~ A RESOLUTION URGING CONGRESS TO SUPPORT FINANCIAL AID AND EDUCATIONAL LOANS FOR STUDENTS OF HIGHER EDUCATION. THE CITY OF ASHLAND RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. The City of Ashland recognizes the importance of education to the future of this country, and accepts its responsibility to support the availability and affordability of education for all students despite their economic situation; and SECTION 2. The 1995 Cost of College index shows that tuition for colleges and universities, private and public, is still rising faster than the average family income; and SECTION 3. The cost of borrowing money for education has increased while at the same time there has been a 20% decrease in the amount of grant money available; and SECTION 4. Nationally, the percentage of students relying on educational loans has grown from 1796 in 1975-76 to 53% in 1993-94, and now constitutes close to 70% of all aid received by students at Southern Oregon State College. SECTION 5. There is a growing number of students who will face debts of $10,000 to $50,000 by graduation which negatively impacts the families of the students as well as the students. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Counc'tl of the City of Ashland, Oregon, that given the crisis facing higher education, the City of Ashland urges Congress to support the continued choice offered in the direct loan program, and to support loans for higher education by voting no on the proposed cuts in financial aid, and to support the continuation of grants and other financial aid measures. The foregoing resolution was READ and DULY ADOPTED at a regular meeting of the City Council of the City of Ashland on the 2rid day of January, 1996.
