HomeMy WebLinkAbout1937-0817 REG MIN August 17, 1937 No. 20 The oounoil met in regular session at 7:30 P. M. this date. Present: Mayor Wiley, Counoilman Applewhite, Blake, Hansen, Ingle, Koozer. Absent: None The Mayor announoed that he VIJOuld like to appoint Dr. W. J. Crandall to fi~l the vaoancY"oreated ~y the death of Dr. F. G. Swedenburg on the oouno1l, and follow1ng a mot1on to confirm the appointment which was unan- imously oarried, Dr. Crandall was sworn in by the Recorder and entered upon his duties as a member of the oouncil. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved as read. The monthly report of the Park Commission was received and filed and monthly reports of the Electric, street and Water Departments, the Librarian and City Reoorder were read, accepted and ordered plaoed on file. Following a recital by Mr. Fred Bergar, 162 Scenio Drive to the effeot that he had been penalized for paying his bill after the loth of the month, but that he had just moved to Ashland and was not aware of the ruling, motion was made by Ingle and seoonded by H~D8en that the penal ty be remitted. Carried. The following applioations for building permits were presented: Noo 21. To erect new Theatre atb170 East Main street at an approxi~ mate cost of $10,000 by the New Lithia Theatre. No. 22. To re-root dwelling at 30 North Second street at an approxi- mate oost of $197.00 by J. A. Ford. Motion was made and seoonded that the permits be granted. Carried. The penalty against T. L. O'HARP~ was remitted. Mr. O'Harra having mailed his check on the night of the loth, but theenveihpp being a.ate stamped the 11th. The placing of publio liability and property darmge insurance on all city owned equipment was disoussed, bids having been reoeive~ on this insurance as follows: I. C. Erwin, United Pacific Ins. Co., $284.20. Engle & Thomas, General Aocident Assurance Corp., $298.68. The fact thaj I. C. Erwin had the business the last year and the impression that he had the largest share of the City's business now, and a comparissn of the financial standing of the two insuranoe oompanies, resulted in a motion by Koozer, seoonded by Hanseh that the General Insurance policy be acoepted~ Roll oall was ordered, the vote being, Ayes: Blake, Ingle. Crandall, Hansen, Koozer, Applewhite. Carried. Committee Reports: Electrio: Biegel asked authority to purchase about $1200.00 worth of oopper wire and upon motion by Blake, seoonded ~y Hansen and follow- ing a unanimous roll call, the :D~chas~ was authorl.zed. . Water: The neoessity for buy~ng p~pe was brought up and upon ~ot~on by Applewhite the Cit~r Superintendent was instructed to.oall for b1ds on a oarload of about 5000 feet of pipe. Canied. Ingle reported on the Congrag-a. tional Church property now leased by the Associa ted Oil Co. for a service sta tion. Fred Tayler and H. L. CJa ycomb of the Chamber of Commerce were present and addressed the counoil on the subjeot of advertising signs at Weed, California and asking that this project be considered when the budget is being prepared for the year 1938. Plans for a new fire house at the warehouse were eXhibited and disoussed. It was reported the. t :Mrs. Pearl Mayberry living on Third Btreet had been injured last January and was preparing to press a olaim against the City' of Ashland. Following some disvussion, motion was made by Ingle and seoonded by Hansen that the City Attorney notify Mrs. Mayberry that there was no lia bili ty on the part of the City of Ashland. Carried. Cemetery: Upon moti on by Ingle, se oon~e,d,..b~~:Kt"o~;er, Mr.. Fr?st was authorized to re-purchase oemetery lots and r'eceive comm~SS1.on of 25%. Carried. The Briggs lot O:Q, the corner of Four~h a~d "En streets was disous- sed but no aotion was taken towards clean1.ng ~t up. On motion the cOWlcil adjourned to meet at the vall of tre :Mayor.
