HomeMy WebLinkAbout1938-0201 REG MIN Feb. 1, 1938 No. 3 The Council met in regular session at 7:30 P. M. this date. Present: ~myor Wiley, Councilmen Applewhite, Blake, Crandall, Ingle, Koozer. Absent: Councilman Hansen. The minutes of the previoys meetings were read and approved as read. The lliorrthljr report of th9 Dump Ground and the annual repprt of the City Recorder for the yem~ ~ 1937 were read, accepted and prdered placed on file. Bills amounting to $~464.32 were read as to total amo'lmt only, 580111e having been oked by the various departments concerned and the finance cormJi tteEi and upon motion made and seconded were ordered paid. A petition requesting the licensing of all classes of business in the city of Ashland in order that said businesses may be protected against unscrupulous compet- ition and may be properly regulated" signed by thirty seven! business men of Ashls.nd vvas read and following a brief discussion it was moved by Blake and seconded by Applewhi~ that the petition be paid on the table and some publicity be given to the IDa tter in order that groups of the various industries be given an opportuni"b.f to get to-gether and discuss their individual problems so as to arrive at a majority decision and -then present their request to the oouncil with recommendatilomso Carried. A letter from Councilman Hansen who was unable to attend the meeting was read containing suggestions that 'the Fire Chief be requested to make his recolmnendations concerning thJr requirements Lpf a new fire truok. A le~~er from the S~ate Highway Comrr.dssion regarding uniformity of traffic signs in eities was read. The hour ha\~ng arrived for hearing of ohjections against ~he construction of ~he sewer in what is to be known as Sewer Distrio~ No. 40 and no objectors being pres- emt, it was moved b:>r Crandall and seconded by Koozer that 1:;he plans and specifications of this sersw dmstrict be approved. Carried. A letter frOl'!l County Judge Earl B. Day WEtS read concerning delinquent city assess- ments against lots 7 and 8 of Block 49, Su.mmi t Addition to 1:;he Ci 1:;y of Ashland which had been purchased by W. W. Robison. The Judge requested that "the Cii;y of Ashland waive the interest on these assessments and the County would pay the actual assessments. It was moved by Koozer and seconded by Ingle that the City of Ashland"cancell the interest on these assessments. Carried. The purchase of a new Chevrolet for the Water Deplrtment, a new Dodge for the Sir eet Depa.rtman t and a newrorti for the Electrio Department having been agBeed upon by the Committees concerned, it was moved by Koozer that tre purchase of thes e oars by bids be confir.med. Seconded and carried following a unanimous roll call. Applications for 'the following building permits were read: No. 30 To erect Grocery StOre at 523 North Main Street at an approxi1nate cost of $150.00 by E. Hicks. No.4. To remodel dwelling at 311 Granite S'treet at an apprOXiillate cost of $300.00 by E. T. Cline. It was moved /#J.~Ji~##JMJ.~ by Ingle and seconded by Crandall that the permi t6 be granted. Carried. Special Comrndttees: Building Codes : Applewhite stated -that the representative of tffi Sta-te Underwriters would be in tovm soon to hel' in making a survey. Telephone franchise: Up~n motion by Ingle" the City Attorney was instructed to negotiate with the Pacific Tel & Tel Co to have a clause included to terminate the pre- s ant franchise in the event they move themr exchange out of town. Crandall brought the subject of the removal of the thru train service by the S. P. Co. Follo1dng discus sion it was decided work wi th ~~ Jackson County ~ber of Commerce and other Chambers in southern Oregon in having tre matter presented lw the Interstate Commerce Conmdssion and it was moved by Koozer an4 seconded by Blake tha-t tm City Attor- ney be instructed to draft tl~ neoessary resolution.
