Crandall, Daugherty. Koozer.. tayler, Woodell. Absent. None The minutes of the previous mee'ting were read and approved as read. Mon'thly reports of' the Electric.. S1:;reet and Water Departmen'ts, Librarie.n and Oi ty Recorder were read. accepted and ordered placed on fileo A letter from the Public Works Reserve was read, but no Action taken. Committee Reports: Fire: Baughman, Fire Chief reported the need for an extra part time man in -the Fire DepariiD.eiit for service during blackouts.. s'tating 'tha"ti he could hire a man on a pari; 'time basis for $2.00 per day and asked authority to do so. During 'the discussion, Herb Moore of the Protec"tiion Division of 'the Coun"tiy Defense Council was present and later Lloyd Williamson of the same division at Medford and both spoke on the need for fire protect.. iono Williamson stated that from 800 to 1..000 men trained as firemen would be needed in Ashland. The moving of the Defense Office from the Armory to the C1'ty Hall _s discussed in this connectiono Woodell suggested that one or more College boys could be aecured probably for this work at little cost; to the cit;y other than a place to sleep nights and they could serve in this office. The advisabili'ty tor 8. full time man was discussed to serve as a firem8J.l under the fire chief however and Harry McNair who was in charge of the Defense Office at the Armory was 8uggested for the job. 'the rate of pay a't firs't being set at regular firaman's payor $105eOO per month. then boosted to $126000 and Koozer suggested that to get a competent man.. $150.00 per manth should be paid. It was moved by Koozer and seconded by Crandall that 'the matter of moving the Defense Office trom the Armory 1;0 the City Hall and hiring McNair at $150.00 per month as an addition- al fireman under the direction of the Fire Chief be referred to the Fire Committeee T~ Job to ter.minate at the descretion ot the Council. Carried. Realty: Woodell spoke on the request of' the Hospital for ble.ok-out curtains but ~ no aotion was taken. Travis and Frazier{HarriS Grocery) for licenses were approved. Carried. The following applications for building permits were presented. No. 104: To erect garage and apartment at 900t Iowa s'tree't at an approximate 008't of 11.000.00 by Arthur S. Taylor. No. 1061 To erec't new dwelling and garage near 400 Liberty Street at an apprexbAi, cost of .4.100.00 by Kroeger and Laht. It _s moved by Applewhite and seconded by Koozer that 'the permits be grantedo Carried. The Mayor read a report by the Ci"by Recorder concerning the great increase in volumn of' work at the Recorder's Office and 1aok of adequate vaca'tions tor the pas-t nine years and the need for aome additional help.
