nte Council met in regular session this date at 7s 30 P. M. Present: Mayor
Wiley, Councilmen Weitzel, Fischborn, Redford, Daugherty, Merrill. Absent,
Nosler.
In the absence of the Recorder, the Mayor appointed Biegel to act as Recorder.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved as read.
Mayor Wiley rea.d his annual report which was accepted and placed on file.
It was- moved by Merrill and seconded by Fischborn that the report be pub-
lished in both the Ashland Daily Tidings and the News Review. Motion carried.
Mayor Wiley appointed the Council committees for 19480 The Committees were
the same as 1947.

It was moved by Redford and seconded by weitsel that the appointments be
approved. Motion carried.
The que stion of plumbing inspe ction was brought up. City Attorney Briggs
was instructed to find out if' the State would accept the city's inspection.

The report of the City Judge for December was read and ordered placed on
file.
The Po lice report from July 1. 1947, to Dec. 31, 1947, was read and ordered
placed on file.
Weitzel spoke on fin~ in City Court. stating that he didn't think that they
were too high compared with other oi tie s. He thought that we had put too much
emphasis on the cash collected. He also made a motion t}~t was seconded by
Redford that the parking meter ordinance be ohanged to make the fine fifty
cents instead of $1.00. City Attorney to prepare the necessary ordinanceo
Motion carried.
Bills totaling $25048.75 were ordered paid, same having 1Been OK' d b~the
various oommittees.
A petition bearing 101 names was read and placed on file. The petition asked
that the present industrial zone be not changed and that saw mills be allowed
in industrial zoneso
A letter from Dr. Elmo Stevenson, President of Southern Oregon College, was
real. The letter stated that they wished to close Ashland Street through
the campus as provided in their deed. The City Superintendent was instructed
to place the necessary signs at ...db end of t he campus in strategio placeso
The letter also a sked that the land lying between the hospital and Memorial
Court, which was at one time deeded to the college but turned down. because of
insuffioient title, be given to the college for parking grounds. Thiawas
referred to the City Attorney to confer with sohool officials.
J. letter was read from the Chamber of Commerce asking .that the franchise tax
on the city bus servioe be cancelled. After some diso.ussion it was move2 by
Redford, seconded by Daugherty, that the 1947 tax be remitted. Motion Carried.
Building permits Number 197 to 201 inolusive, totaling $6000.00 were read. It
was moved by Fischborn, seconded by Weitzel, that they be allowed. Motion

City Superintendent Biegel was authorized to sign b est contract available for
gasoline for the year 1948.
Redford gave a report on additional land for cemeteries. It was moved by
Weitzel and seconded by Daugherty that the Realty committee secure option on
pr operty and report back at next counoil meeting. )lotion carriedo
Briggs reported on his finding in regard to saw mills and ~oke control in
other cities.
It was moved by Weitzel and seconded by Daugherty that Dr. Redford be made
chairman of the Counoil for the year 1948. Upon roll call Redford was elected.
